Piping Our Way into Christmas

Penpont Church Teas' Christmas Fayre

We held Penpont Church Teas' Christmas Fayre on St Andrew's Day, and piper Robbie was kind enough to let the whole village know we were open for business by piping for the first ten minutes, before dashing off for a performance with the Buccleuch and Queensberry Pipe Band.

As well as the usual home baking, there were Christmas wreaths and knitted dolls for sale, a raffle and an auction, all to raise funds for Arthritis Care in Scotland. Santa himself arrived with Effel the Elf who was, in my opinion, suspiciously tall.

It was a wonderful afternoon, and the knitted dolls alone (all knitted and donated by Judy Macdonald from Dumfries) raised £105 for us. I managed the highest bid for the Christmas cake, which will save me a lot of work later this month!

Of course, the tragedy in Glasgow did not escape our thoughts. The Clutha Vaults was the first pub in Scotland I ever went to, and I remember the night particulary clearly as it was also my first night out with my husband-to-be.

Condolences to the relatives of all who died, and to that great city itself.
